What plans does the investment fund that made some of the largest transactions in Romania have?

♦ The private equity fund sold the Profi supermarket chain to the Dutch-Belgian group Ahold Delhaize, owner of Mega Image, at the end of 2023 for 1.3 billion euros (enterprise value). ♦ More recently, in April 2025, it sold the Regina Maria private healthcare business to the Finns from Mehilainen. ♦ The newest exit is that of Cargus, the courier company being acquired by Sameday, a company in the eMAG group.

In less than two years, the private equity fund MidEuropa has sold all three companies it had in its Romanian portfolio – Profi, Regina Maria and Cargus, collecting 2.5 billion euros (enterprise value, meaning the amount includes debts). Now, the investor no longer owns any local companies, but Robert Knorr, managing partner of MidEuropa, says that the relationship with Romania is not over. Moreover, he announces that the fund is in advanced discussions for a new local acquisition.

"The last year and a half has been a very good one for us. A series of investment cycles have ended and we have managed to sign agreements with important strategic investors. For example, at Regina Maria, we are talking about an investor – the Finnish Mehileinen group – who is entering Romania for the first time. At Profi and Cargus, we are talking about strategic investors already active in the market, who are thus consolidating their presence here," he said in an exclusive interview with Ziarul Financiar.
